This past weekend I got to celebrate my birthday with an incredibly special lunch at Avondale wine farm. We were fortunate enough to get a seating on their "field to feast" autumn table which only happens 4 times a year. We enjoyed a beautiful sunny day, driving on a tractor whilst viewing the beautiful seasonal changes on the gorgeous Avondale farm, situated below the Klein Drakenstein Mountains, in the heart of the Paarl valley.
What makes Avondale as a farm in whole so extraordinary is their policy, I quote; "our commitment to promoting life leads not only to Mother Nature’s approval; it also ensures the premium quality of Avondale’s unique, naturally-made, slow wines". Not only do they produce exceptionally good wines but their farm is closely monitored and run by mother nature herself. They are a certified organic farm and they practise bio-dynamic agriculture.
Upon visiting Avondale you will notice ducks and chickens roaming around freely in the vineyards as well as their amazing vegetable garden. They are transported around the farm with a unique tractor made especially for them and it is quite something to experience. They play a big part in Avondale's holistic biological approach, which combines organic and biodynamic principles with modern science.
Our lunch at FABER was exceptional, to say the least. Eric Bulpitt and his team treated us to various plates of wholesome goodness. 10% of the fresh produce is currently harvested from the farms garden then carefully prepared and plated with an extraordinary eye for detail. I will let the photos speak for itself as I can not find the right words for the sensational lunch we experienced. Each course was naturally paired with a matching wine from the farm itself. Needless to say I got stuck on the champagne, maybe because there was so much to celebrate!
